On 11 February , we will honour the life and legacy of Nancy Stark Smith with an Underscore .
The American dancer and teacher was a key figure in the expansion and deepening of the practice and research of Contact Improvisation. Nancy left a significant mark as co-editor of Contact Quarterly magazine, alongside Lisa Nelson. We celebrate her life and work with Under_Score Jam, a concept Nancy designed to integrate Contact Improvisation into a broader arena of improvised dance practices. This format promotes the development of greater fluidity in ‘spherical space’ — dancing alone or together — and the integration of kinesthetic and compositional concerns into the act of improvising.
